  4. Mossman's Spelltester (MST) is intended to allow preschool
  5. children and above the chance to interact with the PC and provide
  6. an educational enjoyable learning experience.  The child should
  7. initially be helped throughout by an adult or experienced
  8. computer operator.  Later as the child becomes familiar with the
  9. program he/she may play more independently.

  11. You'll need a Soundblaster card and the Soundblaster SBtalker
  12. software to play since the program utilizes the text to speech
  13. capabilities of the Soundblaster card.  MST supports  a mouse as
  14. long as the appropriate mouse driver is loaded.

  59. YOU SHOULD PLACE ALL OF THE ABOVE FILES IN THE SAME DIRECTORY
  60. OR THE PROGRAM MAY STOP.

  62. To run MST you first need to install Sbtalker which is provided
  63. with your Soundblaster software.  If you've previously used the
  64. install or setup feature of the Soundblaster software then you
  65. should go to the /SB directory and type SBTALK <enter>.  This
  66. should load the SBTalk program necessary for the text to speech
  67. conversion used by the MST program.  To then run MST, go to the
  68. directory that contains MST and type MST <enter>.  
  69.  
  70. Alternatively, you may let the "GOMST.BAT" batch file load the  
  71. SBTALKER driver and then start the program for you but 
  72. these are the requirements: 1) the sbtalk.bat file needs to
  73. be located where your  SET SOUND= statement points to or, 2) the 
  74. sbtalk.bat file is in the c:\sb subdirectory. Of course you can 
  75. always load sbtalker driver manually yourself and then start MST 
  76. by typing "MST" instead of "gomst".
  77.  
  78. Another additional feature added to MST ver 1.5 is the command line 
  79. argument.  Either with the GOMST command OR with the MST command you
  80. may specify either the "Easy" words or "hard" words to start with
  81. and/or give your name to use for the game.  Again you may use one,
  82. both or none of these command line arguments however if you don't use
  83. one or the other you'll still be prompted to enter them at the start 
  84. of the game.

  86. HOW TO USE THE COMMAND LINE ARGUMENTS: 
  87.   
  88. 1) To start with the easy word text file and your name is Bubba 
  89.    then you would type  gomst /e /Bubba (or /E, also can leave 
  90.    off the slash with the name i.e. gomst /e Bubba)
  91.  
  92. 2) To start with the hard word text file and you don't want to 
  93.    give your name type gomst /h  (or /H)
  94.  
  95. 3) To start without specifying either bank of words but to give your
  96.    name then type  gomst /Fred  (or gomst Fred)
  97.  
  98. 4) You may use any of the above with the MST command as long as 
  99.    you have already loaded the SBTALKER driver yourself (i.e.
  100.    MST /e  Mary)
  101.    
  102. Tip: You must leave a space between the different arguments, the order
  103. they are typed is not important ....

  108. The program works like this:
  109. the user enters his/her name (if it wasn't specified at the command
  110. line) and then selects either the easy or hard words(again if this wasn't
  111. set at the command line), then should select start from the pull down menu
  112. options, during the spell test one may stop at a PRESS ANY KEY
  113. PROMPT by selecting F5, you can listen to the word again by
  114. selecting F6, or have the word spelled for you after a mistake by
  115. hitting F10.

  117. Tip:  Some words just aren't spoken real well with the capabilities
  118. as they are of the S-Blaster and the SBTalker driver.  You may be able
  119. to improve the speech  by slowing the speech down somewhat
  120. and increasing the volume.  To do  this first have the word spoken and
  121. see if you understand it.  If you do, press a key to input the answer 
  122. but if it is not understandable then press either <F8> to go to the
  123. speed adjustment or the <F7> to go to the volume adjustment.  When 
  124. you return the word will be spoken again.

  126. Once one bank of words (easy or hard) is used up you may restart
  127. or change to the other bank of words.  The user is encouraged to
  128. make new banks of words (see README.2nd).

  131. MST may be copied, uploaded or distributed as long as it is not
  132. included in any commercial software/hardware packages without the
  133. consent of the author.  This program was developed and tested by
  134. Dr. Brad Moss,M.D.,A.B.U. for my children's enjoyment.  It worked
  135. for me and I make no guarantees how it will work for you.
